"Acer Inc., the world's second-largest personal-computer maker by shipments
after Hewlett-Packard Co., is confident that it will accomplish its goal of
becoming the No.1 notebook vendor this year

"According to research firm Gartner Inc., Acer overtook H-P in the first
quarter as the world's biggest supplier of notebook PCs shipping 9.49
million units, slightly above H-P's 9.47 million units.

"Acer's 2007 purchase of U.S.-based computer maker Gateway Inc. helped it
extend its footprint in the North American market and become the No. 2
 competitor in the industry.

My comment: In the FIRST quotation, please note "personal computer
 "includes desk tops and notebooks.

Age; Asustek is introducing tablets in response to the Apple blockbuster but
still sees a future for netbooks. So far, investors aren't convinced.

("Netbooks now represent nearly 40 percent of the Asus brand's sales and
have been the primary factor in helping Asustek tie Lenovo as the world's No
. 5 portable PC company, according to researcher International Data Corp")

 My comment:
 (a) The "portable PC
" in the quotation includes netbooks and notebooks.(b) Asus invented netbooks but Acer has surpassed Asus in notebook shipment.
 (c) Please take notice of the bar chart (white bars on red background). This
is what takes me by surprise, although I knew half a year ago that Asus was
catapulted into No. 8 in PC shipment worldwide.

 (e) In the same issue is a commentary about Mr. Steve Jobs, that has nothing
 to do with Taiwan:

Devin Leonard, The Last Pitchman; Despite leaks and glitches, Steve Jobs
proves once more that when it comes to channeling desire, no one else comes
 close.

near the town's new meeting house")

 (c) IT in Taiwan and China  /  Hybrid vigour; Taiwan’s tech firms are
conquering the world—and turning Chinese. Economist, May 27, 2010.

My comment: In my view, there is no boundary in science or engineering. So
there is no question of "turning Chinese"--or Taiwqanese, for that matter.
