When I say I am from Taiwan, my experience in various states of United States are vastly different: People either have not heard of it, or are vaguely aware of it but can not recall the context. Some mistake it for Thailand. Most do not know where it is geographically, or has a connection with China. Extremely rare is the one who knows. This is not unexpected of Americans, many do not read newspapers (they watch television news occasionally). In my graduate school at University of Illinois, a white female graduate student who was admitted a year before me but had the same thesis advisor as me did not know where Ohio was within the United States. She lived her whole life in a Chicago suburb.
