My comment: Almost half a century ago, soon when my aunt went to a university in Taipei, she telephoned home to ask whether it would be all right to date a man of the same surname. Her parents were startled (was she serious?), and said no. She did not. Reflecting back, it was just silly, which seemed to be a custom of sorts, I was told.
