标题: Nursing Makes Great Strides (in US)
Laura Landro, Better Care at Your Bedside; Hospitals hope face time and personal attention will help make recovery easier. Wall Street Journal, July 22, 2014.

Excerpt in the window of print: A patient’s daughter says the extra time her father’s nurse, Chris Hoang, spent with him paid off. Tests took place when they were supposed to. ‘He was a total patient advocate,’ she says.

Note:
(a) Recall nursing is constantly the most respectable profession in US, more than doctor.
(b) For the Vietnamese surname Hoàng, see Huang (surname)  黄
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huang_(surname)
(In Vietnam, the name is known as Hoàng or Huỳnh

But the protagonist in this report looks bi-racial (Vietnamese and white).
(c) “nurses may spend less than two hours of a 12-hour shift in direct patient care, studies show”

I do not know the 12-hour shift is common in US. In Taiwan it is 8-hour shift; I was unaware of the 12-hour one there.

(d) "Chris Hoang, a nurse at Novant Health[ ]Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte, NC * * * Presbyterian Medical Center is one of 14 hospitals operated by Winston-Salem, NC-based Novant Health * * *Mr Hoang, 27, graduated from nursing school last year after working as a certified nurse assistant."
(i) There should be a space between the two words: Health and Presbyterian.
(ii) Our History. Novant Health, undated
www.novanthealth.org/home/about-us/our-history.aspx
("Novant Health was formed July 1, 1997 by the merger of Carolina Medicorp of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Presbyterian Health Services of Charlotte, North Carolina")
(iii) novant
en.wiktionary.org/wiki/novant
(conjugations of verbs in both French (“nover”) and Latin (“novō”): both mean “to make something new”)

(e) "Novant has expanded the duties of staffers, like licensed practical nurses, or LPNs, and certified nurse assistants, or CNAs, at all its hospitals, including 50 medical-surgical units. CNAs are licensed to provide care such as changing wound dressings and inserting bladder catheters, but they often weren't doing so. The shift to the team-based model helped Novant save $20 million last year, adding more certified nurse assistants without any overall reduction in nursing staff."
(i) licensed practical nurse (all US state and territorial boards also require passage of the NCLEX-PN exam)  Wikipedia
(A) National Council Licensure Examination
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Council_Licensure_Examination
(There are two types, the NCLEX-RN [registered nurse] and the NCLEX-PN [practical nurse])
(B) Elizabeth Ross, LPN vs RN: The Advantages of Being a Registered Nurse. Rasmussen College, May 21, 2013
www.rasmussen.edu/degrees/nursin ... g-registered-nurse/
(“The biggest immediate difference between the LPN versus RN career path is the degree you’ll earn. RNs earn a professional nursing degree [bachelor’s or associate degree], while LPNs earn a practical nursing degree. A professional nursing degree consists of more courses, so it takes more time to complete than a practical nursing degree. However, with either option you must take and pass the NCLEX exam before officially becoming an LPN or RN.”)
(ii) certified nurse assistant
(A) Tiffany Michaels, Requirements to Become a CNA. CNA Exam CRAM, undated.
cnaexamcram.com/requirements-to-become-a-cna/

CRAM is the name of the CNA exam; I do not know what it stands for.
(B) American Red Cross offers a 160-hour course to satisfy the first requirement: take and pass an accredited course.
(iii) In Taiwan, only doctors, not nurses, can insert bladder catheters, though the procedure is simple and safe.

(f) "Last week, Mr. Hoang was caring for patient Rafe Pride Sr, 91"

Rafe (given name)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafe_(given_name)
(It is an old variation of the name Ralph, which is traditionally pronounced as Rafe in the UK)

(g) “Nurses make rounds hourly [on the hour] to check on the half-dozen or more patients under their care. Nurse assistants stop in every hour on the half-hour.”
(i) on the hour: at 9:00, 10:00 etc
(ii) on the half-hour: at 9:30, 10:30 etc

(h) "Nurse Corinne White says spending more time with patients enables her to bond with them. As a result, she says they feel comfortable communicating their needs and concerns, especially when about to undergo an invasive procedure like a catheter insertion."

There are various medical devices called catheters (all of which are basically a tube which one can snake through various another tube of bigger diameter). Here it says catheterization is "an invasive procedure"--indicating it is not (urinary) bladder catheter, but possibly heart catheter--which will be insereted through femoral artery in the groin to the heart.
