My comment:
(a) The NYT report is based on

Marriage and Cohabitation in the United States: A Statistical Portrait Based
on Cycle 6 (2002) of the National Survey of Family Growth.
Vital and Health Statistics Series Report, Series (Sr.) 23, No. 28 (
published by National Center for Health Statistics, Center for Disease
Control and Prevention), Mar. 2, 2010.

(b) The NYT report says, "'Cohabitation is increasingly becoming the first
co-residential union formed among young adults, the study said." Instead of
marriage (as the first co-residential union), that is.

Quote:

"mixed-race marriages have jumped 20% since 2000 to 4.5 million, or 8% of
the total

"About three of 10 marriages involving Hispanics or Asians are now mixed-
race, and almost one of six involving blacks are mixed race

A question on Cohabitation: Is Cohabitation the cause of higher divorce rate, or a result of being more common among people more likely to get divorced in the first place?  It's probably very hard to answer because it's impossible to do controlled experiments.

Intuitively I would say both are in effect here. People care about traditional morality would likely think both cohabitation before marriage and divorce immoral, therefore people who do cohabitation before marriage are more likely to take divorce less seriously. On the other hand, the sense of morality may be affected by the action of cohabitation. If the "rule" was broken before, one may feel less guilty to break it again.
