My comment: BGM-109 Tomahawk
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BGM-109_Tomahawk
("operational range: 2,500km" or just less than 1,600 miles)

Triple the range, that is.

I was WRONG. The press release is not about range extension but about remote control.

(1) I re-read the press release.

(a) "The missile launch took place off the southern coast of California into
China Lake Test Range."

This indicates the starting point and end point of the missile.

(b) The press release subsequently cites Tactical Tomahawk Command and
Control System.

Wayne L. Harman et al, The Tactical Tomahawk Weapons Control System:
Interface Design Project. Univ of Virgnia/US Navy, undated.
www.sys.virginia.edu/hci/papers/capstone%20paper5.doc

Quote:

"Current Tomahawk missiles are programmed and launched with a predetermined
flight path and target. The missile can be launched from either a ship or a
submarine and has a range of over 800 nautical miles ('U.S. Navy,' 2000).
Once over land, its guidance system computer compares the surrounding
terrain with the maps in its memory to keep the missile on the correct
course. After launch, the operator cannot control the missile and only
receives information via the Tomahawk In-flight Position Reporting System (
ORD, 1998).

"The new Tactical Tomahawk Weapons Control System (TTWCS), which is not yet
operational, will improve upon this successful design by adding some
powerful capabilities. The new missile will have the ability to be
retargeted while in flight, making it capable of striking an emergent target
of opportunity that may not even appear until the missile is actually
airborne.  The operator will be able to keep missiles in ‘loiter’ patterns
over enemy territory until emergent targets appear, giving the Navy the
power to strike an emergent target within minutes of its initial appearance.

(2) Guided missile
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guided_missile#Preset_guidance

One may want to consult sections
(a) 2.1 Remote control guidance
and (b) 3.2 Preset guidance.

Though it does not say anything useful, one may at least learn the terms.
