My comment: The article says, "Before 2008, this was not a problem. The 50-60 Chinese subs went out on only six patrols in 2007." That is six patrols for the entire fleet of up to 60 subs--not just one sub.

(a) Type 214 submarine

(The Republic of Korea Navy has ordered nine Type 214 submarines, designated as Son Won-Il class, to be built in Korea by Hyundai Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering; three first batch models had entered service since 2007, and six second batch models will enter service from 2012.)
(b) Kiel

(capital and most populous city of the northern German state Schleswig-Holstein, with a population of over 236,000 (2007))

(3) India to spend 11 billion dollars on six news submarines. Invitations to a tender would be sent to Russia, France, Germany and Spain. These submarine will be diesel-electric with air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems.

"Conventional diesel-electric submarines have to surface every few days to get oxygen to recharge their batteries. With AIP systems, they can stay submerged for much longer periods, narrowing the gap with nuclear-powered submarines which can operate underwater for virtually unlimited periods."

Currently India does not have a nuclear submarine or Ballistic missile submarine (SSBN). For the former, see section 5.6 Submarines of
