Small matter that the man going by the name Li Zheng Ping was not, in fact, Chinese. In using a Chinese name for campaign purposes, Michael Nava simply was taking advantage of a little-known, perfectly legal opportunity

Note:
(a) Leland YEE 余 胤良
(b) Mike ENG 伍 國慶
(c) Betty TOM CHU 趙譚 美生
(d) Session Law: Acts 2010: An Act Relative to the Preparation of Certain Bilingual Ballots in the City of Boston. (see House, No. 4880) Approved by the Governor, July 31, 2010
http://malegislature.gov/Laws/SessionLaws/Acts/2010/Chapter201/Print
("Bilingual ballots in English and Chinese shall be provided in each polling place in the city where there are at least 35 registered voters with Chinese surnames. Bilingual ballots in English and Vietnamese shall be provided in each polling place in the city where there are at least 30 registered voters with Vietnamese surnames.")

The law became effective Jan 1, 2011. For example, Boston mayor Thomas M Menino, of Italian heritage, is transliterated as 萬寧路, as he has been.
