 My comment:
 (a) GDP per capita in the graphic obviously is PPP, not nominal. That explains Taiwan has always surpassed South Korea. (In terms of nominal one, Taiwan is behind S Korea in recent years.)
 (b) The last and penultimate dips for Taiwan occurred in 2008 and 2001, respectively. Those tow for S Korea, in 2008 and 1997, respectively.
