My comment:
(a) Although I place this posting in this board, the species is genetically
remote from the dog as a pet.

The article states, "Wild dogs are not dogs, which split off from wolves
only in the last 30,000 years. In contrast, wild dogs last shared a common
ancestor with dogs or wolves about 6 million years ago."

(b) African Wild Dog
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_wild_dog

Quote:

"The African Wild Dog hunts in packs. Like most members of the dog family,
it is a cursorial hunter, meaning that it pursues its prey in a long, open
chase. Nearly 80% of all hunts end in a kill. Lions, the top predator, only
30%.

"it [the species] is strongly affected by competition with larger carnivores
that rely on the same prey base, particularly the lion and the Spotted
Hyena. Lions often will kill as many wild dogs as they can but do not eat
them. Hyenas usually follow them to steal their kills.
