In reverse chronological order:

(1) White House deputy spokesman Bill Burton just now made comment in
support of Secretary of Clinton's speech of yesterday, saying Pres. Obama is
"troubled" by the cyberattack. For the latter, see (3).

(2) 美评论人士:对中国应当以硬碰硬. VOA Chinese, Jan. 22, 2010.

American Foreign Policy. New York Times, Jan. 22, 2010.

("The Obama administration has been similarly cautious. Last week, a senior
administration official said the United States would issue a 'démarche' —
a diplomatic move often used to lodge a protest — against China in the
coming days. An official said Thursday that the administration would hold
off to see whether the Chinese responded to Mrs. Clinton’s call for an
explanation of the Google allegations.")

My comment: There is no need to read (3) or (6) except the quotations.

(4) James Kynge, Full Circle; China and the west; A halt to self- censorship
returns Google to its liberal but the foray lays bare a need to reassess
the assumptions that underlie all efforts to engage with Beijing. Financial
Times, 17, 2010.

Please read the first five paragraphs only, including a Chinese who
commented, "There is no way that Google will get away with this. They will
have to leave China for sure,"

My comment: In the print but not online version, there was a world map, with
the caption: "Different perspective: on display at the library of Congress
in Washington, a map placing China at the center of the world. Dating from
1602 and printed on rice paper, the document is by Matteo Ricci [利瑪竇,
1552-1610], an Italian missionary. Four centuries on, Beijing still feels
able to ignore outside opinion on how it conducts itself."

Taking a close look at the map, I was impressed. (Contrary to the assertion
of Financial Times and many others, the center of the map is north pole--not
China.) I saw no boundary for China, which was marked "大明一統; Asia was
亞細亞; US, 亞--I cannot decipher the second character--利加. I can not read
the characters over Taiwan or Japan.

provide the epitaph. Economist, Jan. 14, 2010.

Quote:

"Chinese web portals buried the story. Many internet-users in China have
become adept at finding ways of circumventing China’s blocks on overseas
websites, including the installation of 'virtual private network' [VPN]
software. Numerous tributes to Google that rapidly appeared on Chinese
internet discussion forums, and flowers laid outside Google’s office in
Beijing, showed that the attempts at censorship had failed. Few, however,
believe the company’s announcement will dissuade China from keeping on
trying.")
