On Dec. 2, 2010 (cover date Dec. 4) Economist magazine published a special report on China's place in the world.

(1) Leaders: Global power  l  The Dangers of a Rising China; China and America are bound to be rivals, but they do not have to be antagonists.

My comment:
(a) "Leaders"--located at the first several pages of each issue--is the equivalent of a summary in Economist.
(b) No need to read the report.

(2) Brushwood and Gall. China insists that its growing military and diplomatic clout pose no threat. The rest of the world, and particularly America, is not so sure, says Edward Carr.

My comment: No need to read it, either.

(3) The Fourth Modernisation. China is becoming a military force to reckon with in the western Pacific. How should America respond?

My comment: Please start from the section with heading "Pacific in Name Only" --to the end.

(4) Less Biding and Hiding. China is becoming more nationalistic and more assertive. How will other countries react?

My comment: Read pnly
(a) paragraph 1;
(b) last sentence of paragraph 2: "Under Deng Xiaoping, Mao’s eventual successor, China even reluctantly accepted America’s continuing arms sales to Taiwan."

That is shocking and unheard of. But the magazine does not show its hand (evidence why it says so).
(c) first sentence of paragraph 16: "Unlike professional Western armies, the PLA speaks out on foreign policy."

(5) In the balance; Their wealth depends on China, their security on America. Which way should Asian countries face?
http://www.economist.com/node/17601463?story_id=17601463&CFID=156449107&CFTOKEN=36351422
("Japan has also been shifting resources towards its navy, which is still more than a match for China’s")

My comment: Other than that, please read only the paragraph that starts with the sentence: "Or take South Korea, a long-term American ally, which has veered from security [US] to economics [China] and back again."

(6) Friends, or Else. Living with China’s rise will test America’s diplomacy as never before.

My comment:
(a) The tentable title was "U.S. Urges Japan's Military to Aid Seoul."
(b) Ryoichi ORIKI 折木 良一
(c) Taiwanese are Japanese best friends in East Asia.
