(1) Mark LaPedus, Foxconn wants to dominate LCD market. EETimes, Dec. 28, 2010.

Quote:

"'With IPS, liquid crystal molecules rotate in a plane parallel to the TFT substrate when an electric field is applied horizontally,' according to Hitachi.

"On a unit basis, LG Display was the leader with 27.5 percent market share, followed by Samsung with 23.5 percent, Chimei Innolux with 17.8 percent, and AUO with 15.8 percent. On a revenue basis, Samsung led with a 25.5 percent market share, followed by LG Display with 25.3 percent, AUO with 16.4 percent, and Chimei Innolux with 14.3 percent, according to the firm.

Quote:

"An alliance between Hitachi and Foxconn would create one of the world's largest suppliers of small and midsize LCD panels. Foxconn makes LCD panels at its unit Chimei Innolux Corp., which as of this year holds an estimated 9.1% share of the world's small- and mid-size thin film transistor LCD panel market by shipment value, according to DisplaySearch. Hitachi holds a 6.4% share, and their combined share of 15.5% would rival market leader Sharp Corp.'s 15.7%.

My comment:
(a) The print edition end in the sentence "Earlier this year, Sony Corp. sold two television assembly plants in Mexico and Slovakia to Hon Hai"--whereas in the online version, the sentence is in mid-page.
(b) Apple iPad uses the IPS screen.
(c) What is IPS?

(i)  Traditional LCD is Twisted Nematic (TN).

"It was Friedel [in 1922] who first gave the name nematic from the Greek word nema, meaning thread, because of the thread-like discontinuities which can be observed under the polarizing microscope for this phase."
Nematic Liquid Crystals - an overview.  University of British Columbia,

(ii) Pay attention to the second schematic panel, where the left side shows how liquid crystal is arranged when off (no electricity)--with no backlight passing through LCD--and the right side show how liquid re-orients when on.

(iii) The third schematic panel indicates how liquid crystal is aligned in TN when ON (left side), with the liquid crystal in the middle--and furthest away from the electrodes on both the top AND the bottom--virtually vertical, while the liquid crystal on the fringe--closest to the electrodes (top and bottom) parallel to the surfaces.

(d) Why does IPS consume more energy tan TN?

"IPS improves viewing angles of TFT monitors considerably, but means that two transistors are needed for every pixel, instead of the one needed for a TN TFT display. Using two transistors means that more of the transparent area of the display is blocked from light transmission, so brighter backlights must be used. The increased power consumption can make the displays unsuitable for notebook use, but in higher end, particularly multimedia focussed notebooks with widescreen movie viewing as a principle [sic; should be principal] purpose IPS screens are employed. Wide angle viewing is certainly enjoyed, but the price is that battery life may be poor."
