Note:
(a) In chronological order.
(i) Nicholas D Kristof, The Rise of Chinese Cheneys. New York Times, Jan 20, 2011.
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/20/opinion/20kristof.html?scp=3&sq=senkaku%20&st=cse
("Aggressive territorial claims by Beijing are unnerving China’s neighbors as well as Washington. My take is that China has a strong historical case in claiming the disputed islands in the East China Sea known as the Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese. But China’s claims to a chunk of the South China Sea are preposterous, and its belligerence is driving neighbors closer to America")

(ii) Satoru Satoh, Letter to editor: In Japan: It’s Our Territory. New York Times, Jan 27, 2011.

My comment: I took note of the single sentence in Mr Kristof's column the other day. It is obligatory of Japan to write back. No big deal. (Taiwan officials often write also.) I have no idea why this reporter is so excited. I do not live in Japan, so I do not know reaction in Japan.

My comment:
(a) Yama Sakura 日米共同指揮所演習
(b) Yama Sakura 59
http://www.usarpac.army.mil/ys59/

In the home page:
(i) Opening sentence: "Yama Sakura is an annual bilateral exercise with Japanese and U.S. military forces.
(ii) Top Stories in the left lower corner: No. 1 is:

Christopher M Gaylord, Yama Sakura 59 exercise kicks off with opening ceremony in Kumamoto, Japan. Undated.
(Yama Sakura 59 "officially began Jan. 27 during opening ceremonies at Camp Kengun, Japan.)

(c) The number increases by one each year.
(d) Camp Kengun 健軍駐屯地(けんぐんちゅうとんち): 熊本県熊本市, belonging to Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF; 陸上自衛隊)
