(1) Jeffrey Wu, Asustek notebook shipments grew 60 percent in 2010. Central News Agency, Feb 11, 2011.

("Worldwide shipments of Asustek's notebook computers grew 60 percent to 10.9 million units in 2010 from 6.8 million units in 2009, while shipments of its Eee PC netbooks increased to 6 million units in 2010, up 11 percent from 5.4 million in 2009 * * * The strong growth, Shen said, was mainly driven by the western European market")

My comment: This is unusual, for I thought tablets, as well as smartphones, have eaten into PC markets.

(2) Press release: Gartner Says Worldwide Mobile Device Sales to End Users Reached 1.6 Billion Units in 2010; Smartphone Sales Grew 72 Percent in 2010. Apple and RIM displaced Sony Ericsson and Motorola in mobile device manufacturers ranking. Feb 9, 2011.

My comment:
(a) Table 1 is ranking of all mobile devices, which refers to cellphones in this report. Table 2 is ranking of operating systems for smartphones. (Both Tables 1 and 2 are for the entire 2010, worldwide.)

Hence the headline:
Mary Watkins, Apple and RIM join handsets Top Five; Sony Ericsson and Motorola dislodged; Smartphones drive growth in demand. Financial Times, Feb 10, 2011.

(b) Table 1 showed ZTE and Huawei of China made great strides in cellphone shipment last year.
(c) China excels in white-box cellphone 山寨.

The report stated,

"White-box sales exceeded 115 million units in the fourth quarter of 2010 and 360 million units in 2010 overall. Although white box sales helped boost mobile device sales to 1.6 billion units in 2010, it would be misleading to interpret this as market 'growth' in the strictest sense. 'What we see is an increase in addressable market for mobile device manufacturers as consumers shift their behavior to buying new phones from legitimate channels over second-hand and black market devices,' said Ms. [Carolina]Milanesi[, research vice president at Gartner].

So, white-box cellphones accounted last year for 25.4% (115m/452m) and 22.5% (360m/1.6b) for 4Q10 and the entire 2010, respectively.
(d) The report indicated that despite leading for the entire year, Symbian was consigned to second place in 4Q10: "Symbian’s market share dropped further in the fourth quarter of 2010 to 32.6 percent or 32.6 million units. This allowed Android to overtake Nokia's Symbian unit sales during the fourth quarter of 2010."
