(1) The conventional wisdom was, the making a comercial airplane had an extremely high threshold for ANY newcomers. The motion that a newcomer could succeed is delusional. Taiwan tried to but failed (Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) 漢翔航空工業股份有限公司 was founded in 1996).

Basically newcomers that are NOW breaking in are dead on arrival (DOA).

大飞机 = C919

(1)
COMAC still maintains the same delivery schedule that it provided years ago.
Life-size model of C919 passenger jet at Beijing expo. Xinhua, Mar 2, 2011.
http://usa.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2011-03/02/content_12105182.htm
("The jet, which can seat up to 168 passengers, will have its first test flight in 2014. The first delivery of the C919 is expected to be in 2016, after the jet receives its airworthiness certification from the General Administration of Civil Aviation.")

Indeed, COMAC boats of domestically made airplane engines.
Xu Tianran, Aviation firms enter engine market. Global Times, Apr 13 2011.
http://business.globaltimes.cn/industries/2011-04/643733.html
("A domestic-made engine for the C919 is scheduled to be delivered by 2020, Wang Zhilin, general manager of COMAC, was quoted as saying in an April 2 China News Service report")

(2) Makers of regional jets are struggling, which are Brazil's Embraer and Canada's Bombardier. The two vie for the third-largest commercial aircraft company in the world (behind Boeing and Airbus).

("Embraer had sought to shift production at the Chinese plant to its newer and larger Embraer 190 jets. But government-owned Avic balked, not wanting to provide a local foothold for a competitor to its new ARJ21 regional jet. Negotiations to end the stalemate had reached the highest levels of the Brazilian and Chinese governments")
