Li Yuan, China's Sputnik Moment; The unsettling 'ZTE incident' offers a dose of reality for the tech industry/ New York Times, June 11, 2018, at B1 (main article in the first page of business section; her new column, as shown today, will be "The New New World").
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/ ... sputnik-moment.html

Quote:

(a) "The ZTE incident, as it is called in China, may be the country’s Sputnik moment. Like the United States in 1957, watching helplessly as the Soviet Union launched the first human-made satellite, many people in China now see how far the country still has to go.

(b) "This week, I begin a column for The New York Times that looks at the paradox of modern China through the lens of technology. For years, China has defied the axiom that a free political system and economic growth go hand in hand. The thriving tech industry is the epitome of the so-called China model, which says people can rise and prosper under tight government control.

"Most people outside China think of it as “1984,” a dystopian society ruled by a repressive government with powerful brainwashing machines, which it is in many ways. But if you live in China, it feels more like that other dystopian novel, 'Brave New World.' It's a colorful, vibrant and consumeristic society. In many ways, Chinese people have more choice than they ever had before — except when it comes to individual liberty.

Note:
(a)
(i) In cn.nytimes.com today, there is no translation.
(ii) My recommendation is there be no need to read the rest -- because the writer has  no tech background. See next/

(b) Li Yuan is 袁莉.
(i) Ellen Pollock, Pui-Wing Tam and Phil Pan, Press release: Li Yuan Joins The Times as Inaugural Asia Technology Columnist. New York Times, Apr 27, 2018
https://www.nytco.com/li-yuan-jo ... chnology-columnist/
("Li Yuan, a China tech columnist at The Wall Street Journal, will be our inaugural Asia technology columnist based in Hong Kong. * * * Li has been a China tech columnist at The Wall Street Journal since 2015, writing a weekly column called China Circuit [解码中国; written in English]. She previously worked at The Journal as a telecom reporter in New York and as editor of its Chinese-language website in Beijing. Before The Journal, Li was a foreign correspondent at Xinhua who was deployed to Afghanistan, Thailand and * * *")
https://baike.baidu.com/item/%E8%A2%81%E8%8E%89/6079302
(iii) from the Web on Feb 17, 2014: "自2008年以来担任《华尔街日报》中文网主编的袁莉将升任总编辑."

So she has no tech background.

(c) Brave New World was written in 1931 by English author Aldous Huxley. The title came from William Shakespeare, The Tempest, Act V, Scene I, ll. 203–206:

"O wonder!
How many goodly creatures are there here!
How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world,
That has such people in 't [it]."

(i) In the Tempest, a woman named Miranda, who had lived in an island with her father and a slave, said it when she saw men from outside world for the first time, when a tempest brought the ship to the island.
(ii) In Brave New World, John, who had the same background (having lived in reservation said it when he came to the civilized world of utopia.
(iii) brave (adj): "literary  fine or splendid in appearance  <his medals made a brave show>"

Quote:

Note:

I fail to find his English name or affiliation. So I do not know whether he is somebody.
(b) Quotation 2, if true, begs the question where the made-in-china chips are used in China. Toys?
