(1) Kim Bhasin, Crazy Rich Singapore; What summer's most outrageous social comedy gets right about Asia's capital of fantasy. (in the section of Pursuits)
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/f ... -as-you-might-think

Quote:

"The characters in Crazy Rich Asians are not your regular rich folks. They're next-level, unreasonably, preposterously wealthy. * * * The film [will be] out on Aug 15 * * * [I am] from there [Singapore]. Although my family wasn't rich, my mother loved to take tea at 4 pm at the Raffles Hotel on special occasions. Every once in a while, I'd catch the occasional vintage Rolls-Royce cruising down one of the city's immaculately clean streets. My parents still spin tales of lavish galas from the late 1960s, after independence but before the skyscrapers.  Fifty years later, Singapore is a poster child for wealth in Southeast Asia. What began as a trading port and shipping hub has become a global financial capital, thanks to a torrent of investment in its banking industry, now the fourth-most competitive worldwide, according to the Global Financial Centres Index [In 2018, the top 11: London>NYC>HK>Singapore>Tokyo>Shanghai.Toronto>San Francisco>Sidney>Boston>Beijing >> Frankfurt (No 20); but to say Boston is a fancial center is laughable to me], which surveys international business leaders.

"Orchard Road [an orchard or orchards were there; 乌节路 (nothing in the Web says about origin of Chinese name and my speculation is some Chinese dialect sounds like 'Orchard')], a commercial thoroughfare that attracts tourists and well-heeled shoppers. * * * At the two-star omakase temple Shoukouwa [小康和, which bills itself as 'Singapore's only two Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant'], chefs promise to 'caress your palate in elegant finesse.' Odette [a French restaurant without local name, be it Chinese or Hindi], in the National Gallery [2015- ; Chinese name: 新加坡国家美术馆], has an ever-changing S$300 ($240) tasting menu featuring dishes such as pigeon roasted with hay and foie gras from Rouilly, France.

"The wedding ceremony [in the film] takes place at Chijmes, built in 1840 and one of the oldest structures in Singapore. But for an afterparty following the reception at the Supertree Grove, the whole squad heads to the observation deck of the Marina Bay Sands.

(a) Print and the online version are identical.
(b) Raffles Hotel  新加坡莱佛士酒店
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raffles_Hotel
("It was established by Armenian hoteliers, the Sarkies Brothers, in 1887. The hotel was named after British statesman Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore" in 1819)
(c)
(i) CHIJMES  (pronounced "chimes;" Chinese: 赞美广场; dull name: Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Middle Education School; began life as a Catholic convent known as the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ) 圣婴女修院 )    en.wikipedia.org for CHIJMES.
(ii) The problem with the preceding Wiki page is it does not explain "school."  For that, see

CHIJMES. National Library Board (NLB) Singapore, undated
eresources.nlb.gov.sg/infopedia/articles/SIP_828_2004-12-15.html
("encompassed [note the past tense] the English-language primary and secondary schools of CHIJ, a Chinese-medium [Chinese spoken there] school called St Nicholas Girls' School [圣尼各拉女校, consisting of primary and secondary schools; secondary school in US is called middle schools], an orphanage")

The schools still exist today, having relocated in 1983. See 特别辅助计划  Special Assistance Plan (SAP)
https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/特别辅助计划
(names of many primary schools and one secondary school start with "CHIJ")
(iii) The oldest building on the site of CHIJMES is Caldwell House (construction started in 1840 and completed in 1841), according to website pf CHIJMES and a en.weki pedia.org for that house.
(iv) Sisters of the Infant Jesus
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sisters_of_the_Infant_Jesus
(table: "previously CHIJ" (which stands for Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus); Nicolas Barré founded in 1666 in northern French city Rouen; now headquartered in Paris; a photo whose caption reads: "Congregation of the Holy Infant Jesus in Singapore" on CHIJMES premises)
(d) Gardens by the Bay

(2) Shira Ovide, Is 5% a Lot? Not as Amazon Sees It.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/a ... nding-is-that-a-lot
("Americans last year bought about $200 billion worth of stuff from Amazon and its Whole Foods grocery stores.  That figure is based on a Bloomberg Intelligence estimate that Amazon sold about $300 billion in merchandise in 2017 and the company’s report that two-thirds of its revenue comes from the US. If that's accurate, Amazon.com Inc. captured about 5 percent of Americans' retail spending, excluding cars and car parts and visits to restaurants and bars.  Whether 5 percent is a lot or a little is in the eye of the beholder")

My comment: Print and the online version are identical. Yet there is no need to read the rest, because there is no cloud of antitrust regulation in the horizon.
