(1) R/V Petrel Discovers Japanese Fleet Carrier Sunk During Battle of Midway. PaulAllen.com, Oct 17, 2019

("The Japanese aircarft [sic] carrier IJN [Imperial Japanese Navy 大日本帝国海軍] Kaga, part of the six-fleet carrier that launched planes that attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, has been discovered by the crew of R/V Petrel. * * * [Kaga's] crew realized the damage was beyond repair, and the escorting destroyer Hagikaze launched two torpedoes at the ship to effectively scuttle it. * * * Along with Kaga, three other Japanese fleet carriers – Akagi 赤城 [In commission 1937-1942, displacement similar to Kaga; named after 赤城山], Sōryū 蒼龍 [In commission 1937-1942, displacement similar to Hiryu] and Hiryū 飛龍 [In commission 1939-1942, Displacement: 17,600 metric tons (standard)] – were sunk during the battle.  The crew aboard R/V Petrel spent several weeks surveying the massive area, documenting more than 500 square nautical miles, all within the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. * * * 'This project is significantly different from previous missions as it required a level of investigation, analysis and survey of a carrier-based engagement initially separated by over 150nm, a total area covering thousands of square nautical miles' ")

(i) Section 1.1 "Yamamoto's plan: Operation MI [both are sectional heading]: Midway Atoll, several months before the battle. Eastern Island (with the airfield) is in the foreground, and the larger Sand Island is in the background to the west.
Typical of Japanese naval planning during World War II, Yamamoto's battle plan for taking Midway (named Operation MI [selected from 五十音]) was exceedingly complex. It required the careful and timely coordination of multiple battle groups over hundreds of miles of open sea. * * * Yamamoto felt deception would be required to lure the US fleet into a fatally compromised situation. To this end, he dispersed his forces so that their full extent (particularly his battleships) would be concealed from the Americans prior to battle. Critically, Yamamoto's supporting battleships and cruisers trailed Vice Admiral Chūichi Nagumo's 南雲 忠一 [南 has either 'nan' or 'na' as Chinese pronunciation] carrier force by several hundred miles. They were intended to come up and destroy whatever elements of the U.S. fleet might come to Midway's defense once Nagumo's carriers had weakened them sufficiently for a daylight gun battle; this tactic was doctrine in most major navies of the time."
