Tomorrow (Sunday, Nov 10, 2019) I will not be able to post, due to lack of access to the Web. This public library will be closed (the towns regularly gives the library a long weekend), though other public libraries in the region )outsde the town) will open.

James R Hagerty, 'Tough Mother' Stamped Image on Columbia Sportswear. Wall Street Journal, Nov 9, 2019,
https://www.wsj.com/articles/ger ... rtswear-11572987682

Note:
(a) The print is somewhat edited (read: shortened) from the online version.

``````````print
paragraph 1: Gert Boyle took charge of her family business, Columbia Sportswear, in 1970 when her husband died of a heart attack. She had been a housewife. Her son and top aide, Tim Boyle, was a journalist student [see (b)() below for his alma mater; Tim was 21 in 1970]. They nearly ran the business into the ground.
paragraphs 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7: same
paragraph 8: "The accidental executive was born Gertrude Lamfrom, the middle of three daughters, on March 6, 1924, in Augsburg, Germany. Her father, Paul Lamfrom, owned a shirt factory." The paragraph ends here.
paragraph 9: same
Paragraph 10 online ("When she arrived in America * * * ") does not show up in print.
paragraph 11, 12: same
The last sentence of paragraph 13 is edited out in print: "Gert Boyle designed a fishing vest that became a hit product. Her three children appeared in product catalogs."  The preceding sentence ("Gert Boyle designed a fishing vest * * * ") is retained.
paragraph 14: "When Neal Boyle died of a heart attack in December 1970, Ms Boyle and her son, Tim, were in a bind. The family house was pledged as collateral for a $150,000 loan from the Small Business Administration."  The main clause "Ms Boyle and her son, Tim, were in a bind." was removed, and the first letter (T) of the next sentence becomes the lower case (t).
paragraph 15 ("Annual sales at the time were about $800,000"), 16  ("Suppliers cut her off"), 17 ("Ms Boyle served as president, even though some bankers suggested she let a man run the company"): taken out:
paragraph 18: "Ms Boyle and her son learned how to fight without wrecking the company. When he wanted to move production to Asia, she resisted, but he finally prevailed. He also had to push her into accepting a diversification into footwear." In print: the last sentence is no more.
The rest are identical.
(b) "a 'cranky and crotchety old broad' * * * In one [Columbia ad], she displayed a bicep tattoo reading 'Born to Nag.' Another described her as 'obsessive, anal, fanatical.' * * * was born Gertrude Lamfrom, the middle of three daughters, on March 6, 1924, in Augsburg, Germany * * * Ms Boyle wrote in her book, 'One Tough Mother.' * * * At a fraternity party [at Univ of Arizona in Tucson] * * * she met her future husband, Neal Boyle [birth name: Joseph Cornelius Boyle (1923-1970, died at 47); Neal was the name he went by but not official], an Irish Catholic. They married in 1948 [she was 24]."
(ii) anal stage
(section 4 Anal-retentive personality)
Section 4 is about people who can not outgrow the anal stage (and stay there). One should view Freud theories with amusement, which has lost favor in modern times 00 because they can not be tested with experiments.
(iii) Gertrude (given name)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gertrude_(given_name)
("is derived from Germanic roots that meant [ger] 'spear' and  [þruþ (trut)] 'strength")
Hence, Gertrude means spear of strength, or strong spear.
