"MEXICO CITY—For sale: One Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, slightly used. Price: Maybe as little as $25. Interested parties please contact Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

"Ever since he took power a little more than a year ago, the Mexican president has been trying to sell the country’s equivalent of Air Force One, which he claims is too extravagant for a developing country.

"The president, who styles himself as a man of the people, doesn't use the plane because he flies commercial. In economy class. Sometimes even in the middle seat. Passengers are often delighted when they board their flight only to find the president sitting alongside them, munching peanuts.

"But the presidential airplane is proving tricky to sell. Turns out it isn't easy to move a jet with a price tag of $130 million that was designed specifically for a head of state. Mexico's government already spent $1.5 million parking it in a California desert awaiting a sale.

"So now, Mr López Obrador has a new idea: He wants to unload the airplane in a national raffle, with each ticket selling for 500 pesos—about $25. The aim is to sell up to six million tickets [for a total of $150 million].
