Note:
(a) "His manners were impeccable. * * * He discovered politics at the age of 12, when General Manuel Odría overthrew a democratic government in Peru headed by a cousin of his maternal grandfather. It contributed to his lifelong hatred of dictators. So too did his authoritarian and abusive father."
(i) English dictionary:
* manner (n): "1d: manners plural
(1): habitual conduct or deportment : BEHAVIOR <mind your manners>
(2): good manners <Someone should teach you some manners>"

(ii) "General Manuel Odría overthrew a democratic government in Peru headed by a cousin of his maternal grandfather"
(A) Who was "he"? My guess was Mario, which turns out to be correct.
(B) Mario Vargas Llosa

("During the government of [Peruvian] President José y Rivero, Vargas Llosa's maternal grandfather, who was a cousin of Bustamante y Rivero,[6] obtained a diplomatic post in the northern Peruvian coastal city of Piura and the entire family returned to Peru" from Bolivia)
(i) His maternal grandfather was Pedro Llosa. Under President Bustamante Pedro was department's prefect, which was not "a diplomatic post." See Peru
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peru
("Peru is divided into 26 units: 24 departments, the Constitutional Province of Callao and the Province of Lima (LIM) – which is independent of any region and serves as the country's capital")
(iii) "It contributed to his lifelong hatred of dictators. So too did his authoritarian and abusive father."
The clause "So too did his authoritarian and abusive father" means "his authoritarian and abusive father" contributed, too. (Another reading is: General Manuel Odría's revolt contributed to his hatred of his abusive father.)
(b) "His inspirations were Jean-Paul Sartre, William Faulkner and above all Gustave Flaubert"
(i) Jean-Paul Sartre

(1905-1980; French)
(ii) Gustave Flaubert
