第一集
我在纽约州上州的一个小村子长大，五千个老百姓都是白人，可能只 有那么几个黑人，一两个家庭，别的都是白人。所以长大都是那种很典型的五十年代的美国的生活，跟亚洲毫无关系。
我爸爸是个教授，他教美国历史，在纽约州立大学。1954年、1959年两年他到印度去教书，我那时候很小，第一次九岁、第二次十四岁。我跟着爸爸，跟着父母、姊姊、弟弟到印度去，在印度住了两年。我在那儿没有上过学，也学了一点印度的话，南印度的泰米尔话跟北印度的古吉拉特，可是不多。但是给我的印象是，有点不同于美国的那种典型的小村庄上的生活，很不一样的一种生活，这跟我后来对中国感兴趣也是有关系的，因为从小就对亚洲的生活方式有印象。
后来我上大学的时候，我对物理、数学感兴趣，而且我的考试都是物理和数学方面最强，文学、历史方面最弱。所以我念了一点数学、物理，到大学二年级就念的不那么好，也不那么喜欢。 我对语言很感兴趣，后来慢慢的我念了一点语言学。我喜欢外国哲学，从古希腊一直到当代的欧洲的什么Wittgenstein之类的。我开始对哲学很感兴趣，所以我主修的专业是哲学系。
我上的是哈佛，很多美国学校的哲学系，他对哲学的一个总的一个前提是：要是把语言怎么用弄通，很多哲学的问题就会好办得多，会容易解决。比如心理和肉体的关系 ( Mind and Body Problem)；形式跟物质的关系 (From and Matter) ,这些问题要是你想弄清楚，到底是怎么用的，弄清语言概念就会解决。

所以我想呢，既然如此吧，我去念一个跟英语很不一样的语言，不像法文，我就选了中文，我就中文那个基本的文法概念、思维方式可能跟英语不同，我可以在相差之间就弄明白一些问题。想来这个可能有点天真，但我不觉得太天真，是有用的。我一直到现在都是觉得中文的基本的概念跟英文的不一样，而且有一些现象很有趣。
我念了两年中文以后然后毕业了，毕业以后念了一个暑期班、速成科。然后那年到香港，那年是文化大革命的高潮，美国人没法到中国去，我到香港去，住了八个月。然后旅行了东南亚，也到了新加坡、马来西亚，见过很多中国华侨，话也学的比以前流利的多。慢慢的对中国的一切感兴趣，什么文化、历史、语言，吃饭、拿筷子什么的，各个方面都都喜欢极了。
那个时候是大学的最后一年，我申请哲学系的研究所也被录取了，也申请了法学院，我当时也想去做一个法官，我对法官的工作很感兴趣，这用道德去判断社会问题，我觉得很有意思，也申请了。可是一去中国、去香港回来之之后，就改行了。念东亚学，念了一个硕士，然后進了哈佛大学的历史系，念了一个中国历史，现代历史，博士。
我在念博士的时候，对思想史很感兴趣，人们到底怎么理解、怎么接受外来的这么大的影响。从鸦片战争、英国人的大炮、大船，一直到不平等条约，到五四运动，怎么打倒孔家店，彻底改变中国的文化。我这些问题很感兴趣，对五四时期的文学作品也开始感兴趣。可是我最感兴趣的是什么呢？是老百姓的思想的变化。因为当时有很多书是写胡适、鲁迅呀什么的很多....包括蒋介石、毛泽东的政治和思想领域，一些伟人的想法，然而老百姓怎么接受、怎么看这个社会的变迁，没有。

六四以后，当然我们办公室不能工作了，我就离开了，到了香港。香港的夏天过了以后就回国了。90年代去了几趟。我们学校普林斯顿有一个暑期班。从60年代开始，在美国一个小大学，midddlesburge 明德大学办。我在那儿本来是念过书，后来是教过书。
我们在90年代之后我们把它移到北京，到北师大的校园去办。有一个普北班叫做普林斯顿在北京的语言训练班。我是发起人之一，我跟我的同事周治平，我们都是发起人。我们本来的承诺是他去一年，我去一年，他去二年，我去一年，他去二年，我去一年。他更喜欢去，他是我们语言教学组的主任。可是我答应他，每三年你可以休息，我替你去一趟，所以94年是轮到我去了。
94年轮到我去做我们的埔北班的主任的时候，我是去了。而且做的很高兴，然后回国以后95年也去了一趟跟学生见面，演讲、跟老师见面，只去了一个星期回来。
96年本来也是有这么个计画要回去，可是我到纽约的领馆去领签证的时候，它不给。它不给，我就奇怪怎么突然不给。当然理由是有很多的，我这共产党到那时候已经不喜欢我，可是很多学者它不喜欢。
我到底最近做了甚么它，得罪了它的事情，我不知道？后来有一个美国朋友在香港，他说我们的香港很容易办理签证，你把护照寄到这儿来，我们一大堆每天一大堆一大堆签证。我说好，不妨试试看。我把护照寄到香港，果然回来了一个两次入境的合法签证。所以我去了，我买了机票去了。当然我去的时候，我有那么一点点不知道我進来会不会有麻烦。因为第一次纽约拒绝了，香港批准了。我不知道？
我在过海关的时候，他看我的护照，看我的签证，很机械化的填吧。他看那个银幕，看那个电视，看了又看，看了、看了、看了好久，然后他用英文对我说Please stayhere.请您坐一会儿。坐一会儿我坐了一个钟头，那是晚上8点到9点的时候，那很多人跑来跑去，说了我听不懂。我听不见他们说甚么话，然后一个钟头以后回来改用中文跟我说。我们跟上面联系,它说不欢迎你到我们国家来，你不能進。
所以不能進，不能進之后因为是那天晚上的最后一个飞机班次，進来的时候他没办法把我立即送回美国，所以有个住房的问题。他到联合航空公司那个柜台去跟那个服务员说，你们航空公司要负责任，要买个旅馆，因为你们带進来了一个没有正式的文件的一个旅客。航空公司它也犯不着，跟这一些小问题弄坏它的甚么跟中国政府的关系吧，反正它说好，给了一个票，我们可以住旅馆。
所以有四个小警察，陪我到一个外国豪华旅店，去租了一个屋子。他那个票拿过来给警察，不让我拿那个票，去注册也都是他们管的。然后上楼住進屋子里头，四个小警察坐在那儿。挺有意思。很晚那时后已经11点钟的时候，我累的不得了，刚下了飞机，我刷牙准备睡觉。当然他把电话拆了，你不允许打电话。我想打电话告诉北师大的朋友，我为甚么不能出来，让他们不要担心。因为他们在外面等着我，不知道怎么回事。不可以打电话。后来我问他那我打电话到使馆美国使馆，不行。不能打电话。
