What the Wiki page says is there was a indigineous word in Japan pronounced hiyori, which was later assigned 日和, simply because "hi" = 日(and somehow "yori" = 和). But the original meaning of assigned kanji should be ignored (eg, 日 is actually "sun" in Chinese).
